You have to give credit to Elon Musk and his company Tesla, before they came along, there were few electric vehicles on the market that people actually wanted to drive. Tesla met consumer demand by building capable, affordable electric vehicles that generally looked pretty good.

But, as much as Tesla cars and SUVs tend to come with a lot of cool features, they have yet to make a real luxury electric vehicle. Tesla vehicles tend to be more like spaceships than luxury vehicles.

Finally, those looking for true luxury vehicles have options.

True Luxury Electric Vehicles

You have to admit it, luxury brands took entirely too long to focus on producing electric vehicles. For the past few years, BMW, Audi, Mercedes, and the other major luxury brands have been playing catch-up. And catch-up they have. The big luxury brands have been putting a lot of resources into developing electric vehicles that live up to the word “luxury”.

BMW’s i3 and i8 electric cars were some of the first vehicles released (2014) from a luxury manufacturer that people wanted to drive. While they have a slight futuristic look to them, the i3 and i8 are eye-catching and quite capable - the i8 can go 0 - 100 km in 4 seconds.

Since then, luxury brands have continued to release electric vehicles that rival their gas or diesel counterparts. The Audi A3 e-tron, as an example, is a stylish luxury hatchback with four driving modes, including all electric.

Benefits of Going Electric

A luxury vehicle supplies a sense of confidence and appreciation for style and quality. Up until recently, luxury drivers had to compromise if they wanted to drive an electric car or SUV. Now they have multiple luxury electric vehicles to choose from.

It gets better. The Government of Ontario is currently running the Electric Vehicle Incentive Program (EVIP) that allows people purchasing electric vehicles to get major rebates - in some cases up to $3,000 or more. If you’re considering an electric vehicle, take advantage of the EVIP.

What About Range?

How far an electric vehicle can go before needing a charge has always been a sticking point for those looking to drive an electric car or SUV. Electric vehicles have improved dramatically over the past couple of years, however. As an example, the BMW i3 has a range of approx. 180 km.

And now that electric vehicles are so popular and common, charging stations are popping up throughout the country. You can use one of a few online charging station locators to easily find a charging station close to you while travelling.
