Crossover Utility Vehicles have been rising in popularity in Canada over the past few years as consumers look for cost-effective alternatives that don’t mean sacrificing on utility. Up until recently, consumers were opting for either a small car or a massive SUV, so it’s no wonder the Crossover is starting to be seen as one of the most practical style of vehicles around. According to a recent Globe and Mail article, the number of small SUVs/CUVS rose by 16.5 per cent!

Even luxury brands like Mercedes are starting to listen to the growing demand from consumers and are branching into this emerging market. Take the 2015 Mercedes-Benz GLA, for instance, which, despite being called a “compact SUV” rather than a “CUV,” is their take on offering a competitive option for those looking for something between a car and a larger SUV. Their alternative branding just a different name for the same product, but shouldn’t come as a surprise considering Mercedes-Benz’s long standing desire to distinguish themselves from the competition. It’s a clear signal that Mercedes-Benz is looking to cash in on the growing demand by offering the comforts of a luxury vehicle while making it competitive with non-luxury brands.

The CUV is proving to be an attractive option for young families and those looking to save a bit on gas, as the fuel costs associated with larger SUVs tend to be one of the biggest drawbacks amongst purchasers. While regular-sized cars may still be cheaper to purchase, consumers are making their preference for the all-wheel-drive experience that a CUV offers clear and are willing to pay a little more up front for a utility vehicle that stands up to the task.
