Over the years, major automotive companies continue to design exceptional vehicles.

As technology evolves, we see faster, more powerful, and smarter cars that intelligently respond to your needs as a driver, while providing comfort and reliability.

Luxury automotive brands in particular go the extra mile for their consumers, engineering superior cars and exotic SUVs that deliver incomparable performance against domestic vehicles.

At Somerville Auto, we carry three of the biggest luxury brands in history: Audi, Mercedes-Benz, and BMW. Each has an interesting history that’s made them a staple in driveways throughout the GTA and Canada.

Audi

Audi is among the best luxury brands in the world. The German automotive brand got its start in the early 20th century. Its exact origins are complex, due to its original founder, August Horch, having a string of unsuccessful business relationships. Horch founded and registered the Audi Automobilwerke GmbH Zwickau group in 1915 and the very first Audi automobile, the Audi Type A, was released the same year. By 1921, Audi had even developed the first left-hand car of its kind, the Audi Type K, providing a better view of oncoming traffic. In 1932 the Auto Union was founded by Horch and two other engineers, which was the prelude to the modern era of Audi. In the 1960’s Auto Union was acquired by Volkswagen, and the Audi brand launched the Audi F103 series in 1965.

The famous four-ringed logo represents the four independent automotive brands that banded together to form the original Auto Union. With its early production of vehicles that produced a measly 22 horsepower, the modern Audi has developed into a roaring machine, blasting up to 450 horsepower on a V8 engine. Today’s luxury Audi vehicles are renowned for their soft-touch, premium materials, suave exterior, and innovative technologies that elevate driving to the next level. The Audi S7 and Audi Sq5 series are just two shining examples of this.

Mercedes-Benz

With the slogan “the best or nothing”, you know you’re behind the wheel of something great when you go with a Mercedes-Benz. In 1886, Karl Benz created the first petrol-powered car. In 1901, the first Mercedes car was created by Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft. Both brands merged in 1926 and debuted as Mercedes-Benz.

Mercedes-Benz was among one of the first vehicles to develop bullet-proof windshields in the 1930’s. Marketed as a strong and reliable automobile, it has been recognized throughout history as the main method of transport for many historical political figures like the Pope. Today, Mercedes-Benz produces luxury cars and SUVs, but also transport vehicles like trucks, busses, and vans. The luxury brand is also very invested in environmental sustainability practices. Since 2002, Mercedes-Benz has been using F-Cell fuel technology to create electric hybrid vehicles. Newer AMG model, like the 2017 Mercedes-Benz Gle43 AMG have improved fuel economy, and the brand continues to design with the environment in mind.

BMW

Car enthusiasts know it by its three-letter acronym. BMW, professionally Bayerische Motoren Werke AG, has been around since 1916. The company actually began in 1912 as an aircraft business called Aerowerke Gustav Otto. The Versailles Armistice Treaty in 1918 at the end of the First World War forced the brand to cease production. So, the company shifted gears and began operations in motorcycle production. Cars came next in 1928.

The famous four-square blue and white logo actually symbolizes the white blades of an airplane propelling through a blue sky, and is homage to where BMW first got its roots.

Luxury cars aside, BMW has played a role in motorcycle innovation since production began. As the years went by, the brand became a signature face in motor rally sports. In recent years, BMW has designed high-performance models like the M5 Series, mid-size crossovers like the X5 Series, and compact crossovers like the X3 Series.
