Intimidated by Car Salespeople? Tips to Increase Your Car Knowledge and Confidence

By: Brenden Somerville   |   14 Jan 2014

In this Globe and Mail editorial, Peter Cheney admits that because he enjoys looking at cars so much but dislikes the process of buying a car, he does himself a favour and regularly checks out the Canadian International Auto Show, where he can browse a showroom of all the latest vehicle models without having to be harassed by sales staff. As great as the opportunity to see an Auto Show always is, you shouldn’t have to go to any such extreme lengths to avoid car salespeople!

If you, like Peter Cheney, feel that car salespeople are individual’s whose sole purpose in life is to make your trip to a dealership miserable, here are some tips to increase your car knowledge and confidence before setting foot in any showroom:

-Research, research, research.

-Get an online quote for a car lease or purchase.

-Call a few different dealerships before coming into the showroom, so you can evaluate your options in a less pressured environment.

-Begin looking for a vehicle far in advance so that you have lots of time to make an informed decision.

-When deciding between options, think about your investment both in terms of a total cost and monthly payments.

-Come prepared. Know your credit score and, if you don’t think the dealer is giving you a great rate, compare it to a few other financing options: through your bank or an independent auto loan.

-Last but not least, don’t let any car salesperson make you feel pressured or rushed into a decision.

Here at Somerville Auto, we believe that your car buying or leasing experience should be one with no pressure, where you can trust that the person you are talking to is being honest and working with your best interests in mind.
