Detroit Auto Show

The North American International Auto Show (AKA. The Detroit Auto Show) came to a close on January 22nd and it did not disappoint.

There were hundreds of new cars unveiled for the 2017 year, including many 2018 prototypes that still have some tweaks to be made. This year was the tenth anniversary of the ultra-luxury automotive event, which meant there were plenty of luxury brands on site.

At Somerville Auto, luxury vehicles are our specialty. From BMW, to Audi, Mercedes-Benz and Porsche, we know a nice car when we see one.

Here’s what caught our eye at this year’s auto show:

Audi Reveals New Q8 Concept

Based on the Q7, the concept that was revealed for the Audi Q8 means that a series of V6 and V8 engines, like the 4L V8 diesel, are likely in store for future drivers. The Q8 concept mimics the classic four-door coupe design. As it stands, the Q8 concept boasts 442 horsepower, 516 lb. to ft. of torque, which means this luxury car will be a fast one and will blow almost anyone off the line. The unveiling of the Q8 means that Audi is highly considering expanding its line of luxury SUVs. While the Q8 concept will not actually be transformed into a real model, it is the star model for what is soon to follow, as production is slotted for 2018.

2018 Mercedes AMG GT Gets a Power Boost

Mercedes-Benz doesn’t play around when it comes to model upgrades-- in fact, judging from past auto shows, they tend to be predictable. All versions of the GT have picked up aesthetic makeovers this year. A new trim level has been added to the Mercedes-Benz AMG GT and it’s received a horsepower upgrade as well.

Several changes to the 2018 GT lineup include the introduction of the GT-C trim package, which blasts a roaring 550 horsepower and 502 lb.-ft. of torque. It will only be available as part of the Edition 50 trim, to commemorate Mercedes-Benz and AMG’s 50th anniversary. To keep things consistent, only 50 will be made, so they’ll be incredibly rare--and most likely a little pricier! All GT models also received the GTR’s active aerodynamics, which closes the front intake tracts to increase efficiency.

2018 Audi SQ5 Goes Turbo

This year’s auto show proved that Audi is serious about introducing personal luxury cross-over vehicles. The 2018 Audi SQ5 says goodbye to its previous engine and welcomes the future of driving with an all-new 3.0L V6 turbo. Standard 354 horsepower remains untouched, but the torque does get a bit of a boost, at 369 lb.-ft. An eight-speed automatic transmission is also present and all-wheel drive now comes standard. You can expect the new 2018 Audi SQ5 to go on sale in the spring of 2017.
