But two of the most common terms that always seem to appear are “luxury” and “exotic”. While the two may seem interchangeable, in the automotive industry, they represent two very different automotive markets.

So, what’s the difference between luxury cars and exotic vehicles, anyways?

What Is a Luxury Vehicle?

Unlike domestic vehicles, luxury vehicles play into a consumer’s sensory experience. Luxury automotive makers choose to manufacture using higher-quality, or harder to source materials, ultimately resulting in a more expensive vehicle. Think about it: does your Honda Civic usually smell like Italian calfskin leather? Probably not. However, the cost that you, as a consumer pay, encompasses a driving experience that domestic drivers can only dream of.

Instead of designing for mass market consumption, luxury cars are more customary. Luxury brands like Audi, BMW, or Mercedes-Benz often have their own versions of the latest smart technologies that are specific to the brand, and offer an entirely new style of driving. For example, instead of offering basic AWD, Audi enables its famous Quattro technology, which is a version of AWD but at a much more engaging level and with better results for the consumer.

Luxury cars don’t always have to be expensive. In fact, you probably see them out on the roads all the time! Audi, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Jaguar and Porsche are just a few that come to mind.

Supercars tend to attract a very specific consumer market. Most supercars are actually modified muscle cars, limited edition models, or custom retrofits that have been revamped and customized with performance in mind. Everything from bigger engines, to custom parts and accessories, lighter building materials, and superior aerodynamics all go into the production of exotic SUVs and exotic cars.
