Luxury vehicle owners are used to paying big bucks when it comes to replacing parts or getting a custom detail job on their Audi, BMW, or Mercedes-Benz.

So, it’s really no surprise that on a trip to the gas station, you want to save money on fuel. But, there’s a general rule that says luxury vehicles can only take the most premium gas at the pumps.

Is this actually true? We’ve searched high and low for the truth and the results are in.

What’s in your Fuel?

Gasoline prices fluctuate all the time. Sometimes, even the “cheapest” regular grade seems to have skyrocketed in price overnight. The thought of only using premium is enough to make anyone cringe. But, if you love your luxury car or exotic SUV, it’s likely worth it.

The quality of gasoline is measured by its octane levels. The higher the number, the more premium or pure the gasoline is. Gasoline is made from crude oil, and before it turns into the lifeblood your vehicle needs, it can be processed into conventional or synthetic fuel. Conventional oil is unrefined and unpurified. This class is usually where you can find your “regular” grade fuel at the pumps. Synthetic oil, on the other hand, is artificially crafted from a various chemical compounds. Fuels belonging to this class are more resistant to rust, composition breakdown, and freezing up in colder temperatures. Because of their hybrid technologies, they work best in newer, luxury vehicles, whereas conventional gas is great for domestic trucks or cars.

Does Fuel Grade Really Matter?

There’s no right or wrong answer. In fact, the best way to know for sure is to look in your Owner’s Manual. If there’s a specific fuel that your vehicle requires, the paperwork will say so. It’s important to remember that if your vehicle can only handle a specific fuel, that you listen. Failure to do so could result in costly damages. Synthetic motor oils have been known to increase performance and cut back on emissions. For this reason, they work great with luxury vehicles, especially because of their adaptability and longevity.

Older, used vehicles that are not yet equipped with fancy technology upgrades can use either conventional or synthetic, but will do just fine with conventional without paying extra. Just remember, that while you might not like the idea of paying more for hybrid motor oil, conventional motor fuel needs to be changed more frequently because it lacks the chemical compounds that break down debris and sludge.
